Our Story
In Manipuri, the ‘Lashing’ means ‘cotton’ and ‘Phi’ means ‘cloth’. So, Lashing Phi, a traditional handwoven cloth of Manipur has been in use for centuries, deeply rooted in the cultural and historical traditions of the region. While there is no exact documented date of its origin, it is believed to have been worn since ancient times, particularly among the Meitei/Meetei community. Historically, Lashing Phi was primarily used by the aristocrats, warriors, and religious figures, symbolizing prestige and status. Overtime, its use expanded beyond the elites, becoming a significant part of rituals, ceremonies, and everyday attire in Manipur society. “By 1930’s a unique fabric called Lashing Phee, made by stuffing cotton in thread wrapping came to be innovated.
